Nokes (Our Dog)

April 16, 2007

We are starting to think Nokes is pretty darn smart. We realized that after Saturday morning, he hasn’t had an acccident in the house since, and before, usually it was once a day. Last night, when we put him in his big doggie box. He was scratching and restless for a little while, and then right when Sarah turned off the lights, he settled down and went to bed.

Today at lunch, I kind of fell up the stairs with my other hand full, and him in my left. He went all the rest of the way up the stairs on his own, and later we set him down to practice again. He didn’t do it quite as easy the second time, but he went the whole way up by himself.

Today we went back to Petsmart to officially adopt him, but PAK wasn’t there. So we got him a new rope to play with instead.

On the way back he tried to climb onto me as I was driving and got outstretched over the console.

Tonight Nokes went into his crate for the first time to sleep, it was really cute. We put up our new bedroom set, and he really likes to hide under there. He has also starting going into his box in our room to lay down as well. When Paula was over last night he spooned her on the back side of her tooshie, lots of great photo opps.

Tonight we also thought that he felt a little warm, so we had to take his temperature, no mistakes this time around.

Today was the first day that Nokes went down the deck stairs, twice, without help.

Tonight we were on the road a lot getting the bedroom set, but the one notable thing that happened…

Sarah said that Nokes saw himself in the chimney glass doors, and started growling really low and backing up, all the way to the back couch across the room. He even at one point jumped into Sarah’s lap and continued to start the glass down. The reality is, he isn’t a genius, but that is ok.

Nokes first storm, he did pretty good. He has started doing a cute little puppy yip bark, which we try to be good and not encourage.

Today three times he responded to the down command, so now with sit, he is starting to recognize things. I think he is starting to get his name as well.

Tonight Sarah said he was walking the perimiter of the deck. He has certain sides he likes to try to get up on, mostly the west side of the deck because it is closer to the ground obviously. He will run all the way from one side to the other just to use that side.

Another behavioral thing, she said that he appears to be hiding certain toys underneath the couch, and paces around whining looking to hide them again after you find them and pull them out.

They just keep coming, tonight was the first time that he went to the dog and sat when he needed to go out and do “his business”.

Today we got a mostly clean bill of health for our new puppy from the vet, which is really good news for us. He may have some allergies, but we have a lot of good information and he seems to be very healthy. He is still so energetic, he bounces, dashes, and tugs really hard on the rope when we play with him. We never have to worry about him not eating either, he inhales everything we give him, which makes us feel good that he is healthy enough to eat.
