Mr. Do!

Rob Carroll’s Mr. Do! going on ebay

Earlier in the week Rob Carroll put his Mr. Do up for sale on ebay. He was so nice to offer it to me first. He had put a new monitor and power supply in the machine, so it had some nice additions, and he wanted a fair price for it. But with shipping it was just going to be too expensive, so I had to let it pass. So he listed it.

This got me motivated, now that I didn’t know if I would know anyone who owned this machine after the auction was over, to give PA Gamewarehouse a call. Rob had found a name, and that is who I asked for. Turns out the name was a little off, and a little research on the site would have turned up the correct one. Joe over there asked me to send and email kind of detailing what I was looking for and going into more depth of what I had started to explain on the phone. I did so, pretty in depth, so hopefully I will hear some sort of reply back soon. He wasn’t even sure if they had that game in the warehouse anymore.

Mr. Do! Ice Cream finished, for now

Mr. Do Ice Cream Treat Illustration

Punched out the remaining shapes I had drawn for the ice cream drawing. I was doing an on / off comparison of the artwork vs. the original image. It is a decent image to work from, but a scan would be even better. For now I think I am going to say that I am done.

There are some areas that are hard to see if the orange is showing through or not. The way it was put on the cab is a little weird. The yellow paint doesn’t appear to be thick enough to cover the orange, so a lot of the orange shows through. So that makes it kind of tough to tell what is what, and hard to replicate in vector form. When I check my work, it doesn’t seem like it has nearly enough orange, but again, hard to tell. Plus, for now, I had to leave the base of the glass stand a solid yellow because I don’t know what the bottom looks like outside of the photos above on the page and freehanding it. Anyone out there have comments?

Ice Cream Sprinkles are difficult to do

Punched out a few more of the shapes tonight for the yellow sprinkles and orange dots. It is pretty tedious, and involves me sometimes redrawing the shapes for cropping in Illustrator, so when I finish it, I finish it.

Working more on Mr. Do! Ice Cream Dish

Finished the shape drawing for the ice cream artwork tonight. I got the artwork colored, and started to do some of the cropping of different overlapping pieces, but there are a ton of them, and I didn’t finish them. I also traced the base of the ice cream dish off of a photo from the sideart, but on this one, I won’t be able to finish it unless I find a full illustration that isn’t rubbed away because the base of the dish is chopped off on the bezel.

Mr. Do! Mustache Guy

All of these guys are weird looking.

Wanting to just finish these characters up and get onto the next step, I did some more work tonight on the two remaining images. I got through some more of the wafer in the ice cream cone, and started to trace what looks like sprinkles. I also finished the guy with the mustache for hair, as you will see to the right. Again, still shooting to finish the ice cream by the weekend, but it may be tomorrow so I am just finished.

Got a lot done on Mr. Do! Ice Cream Dish

Got through a good portion of the tracing tonight, while waiting for someone to call, of the ice cream cone. It would be nice to have it done by the weekend, so that would only leave the other character with the mustache head. He should be fairly easy.

Weird looking Mr. Do! Pasta Guys finished

Mr. Do Three Pasta Guys Illustration
Got three more close up photos from Rob tonight that I didn’t have. One of the ice cream, one of the dopey mustache head guy, and one of the pasta smiley guys. I took today to get started on those, and did the pasta ravioli looking Mr. Do enemy guys, since they seemed fairly easy.

I doubt I will be working on the other two this weekend, the ice cream in particular looks like it will take some time, but hopefully by next weekend I can do one more. There aren’t too many left after these, it will be composing the side art as close as I can without a good tracing source to make it look like the original.
