Sega Pengo Side Art Alternate Version
I’ve been excitedly waiting for two weeks and my new piece of arcade game artwork has arrived! I worked out a deal and was able to secure the Pengo sideart from the QuarterArcade.com warehouse raid. Check out the photos.
I couldn’t believe it, just one week after I got my set of NOS Pengo artwork, out of an operator’s space in Chicago this rare, different Pengo artwork shows up from a warehouse buy in PA. Initially when I saw photos of the side art I thought I liked this alternate version better than the original. After seeing it in person, I am not so sure. However, I do like seeing Pengo and the Sno-Bees in context more, showing the games and more accurately potraying the characters. Even though I love the original Pengo cabinet artwork because, it’s original, I have always thought it looked a little ‘young’.

It was cool to tape the NOS Pengo artwork up on my cabinet and see that it fit the shape of the Sega cabinet perfectly.
I looked through a ton of Sega games from the same time period on Klov, but couldn’t find another one with the same shape. Does anyone know of any?
Shocking to see this artwork. I never thought Pengo had the popularity to have a conversion kit, but maybe it did. I can’t tell by looking at the small graphic of the rare Pengo bezel alternate version, but maybe this artwork looks similar.
This cabinet art was made by Sega for sure, maybe some prototype Pengo artwork? Here is a photo of the copyright “© Sega Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved”;
And the serial number (PN420-0826SP) on the screen printed vinyl artwork;
Anyone ever seen this different piece of Pengo cabinet artwork? Any ideas, best guesses? Anybody have any information on Sega conversion kits or know what other Sega cabinets have the same slope shape as Pengo?

Here is a photo showing the serial number one the Pengo side art, or ‘graphic left / right side’ as the manual refers to it.
All of my Pengo manuals list the serial numbers for the Pengo cabinet artwork to be Left Side – 420-0825, Right Side – 420-0826, not the numbers for the alternate prototype artwork. As you see, the original artwork also has the ‘SP’ after the number, so the only other difference besides the last two digits is the ‘PN’ at the front which I can only assume stands most likely for ‘Part Number’ or even for ‘Pengo’.

Really! You saw a Pengo with this different version of cabinet artwork? Was it on location? Or in an operator’s shop? Where in the US was it? Do you remember anymore of the circumstances to elaborate? Very awesome!
So does this mean, with all the art variations you have, that you are going to make a 2nd machine for your collection with all variation art?

I have always thought you were an inventive thinker in your posts about fixing some of your arcade pcbs. That isn’t a bad idea. Would it really ever happen for cost in my current situation, probably not right now. In five years…yes. I would want to see if I could find out more about that rare Pengo bezel though. I have thought about pushing really hard to try to find original designers or insights for individuals who worked in the arcade division of Sega / Gremlin…but alas, it’s always a time thing.
It would be awesome. Add it to my ‘eventual’ alternative sideart Mr. Do! and I could have a rather strange classic game collection.

My response to your questions. I saw a couple of pictures of a machine with this sideart on the web around the time I picked up my free Pengo machine and had just started researching the game. That was about 11 or 12 years ago…My only other experience with Pengo prior to getting mine was playing one many times at a corner bar on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay in the early 80’s…it always ticked me off that such a simple game could easily smother me so quickly (must have been the beer!), I guess that’s why I like it so much now.

I just updated the prototype Pengo artwork post with a photo of the side art serial number for the original and the differences between the serials of the two pieces.
I didn’t realize you could look in the manual to find part numbers for the graphics, imagine how silly I feel.
so maybe this art belongs with the pushing Pengo marquee?
Pengo doesn’t seem as cartoony cute here as in the other versions of the sideart and matching marquee-IMO

Good assumption that this version of Pengo artwork goes with the pushing marquee. As I mentioned, that alternate bezel version looks like it is heavy on the dark blue coloring as well, kind of like the sideart, so maybe there is more of a pushing theme with one set, and more of a “Hey, I’m standing here, love me – I’m a cutsy kids multi colored penguin” set.

So, you haven’t seen this rare Pengo sideart in person, you only saw it on one machine on the web somewhere. The Pengo that you played in person had the regular sideart? the one in Boston?
You apparently didn’t save the digital photos of that Pengo machine…did you?

Wow! I’ve seen a picture of a machine with this sideart once, but assumed it was a fluke…Looks nice to me, but I still prefer the original. It’ll take a little bit of work to get those vectorized!!!!!
