Glak’s version of Popeye
If you’ve stumbled across some of my older posts, you’ve read about my odd curiosity concerning the Glak / Omni company that was based out of Rhode Island and the cabinets they made. A quick post today to share a photo of a Popeye cabinet that may have been fabricated by Glak.
Glak Bootleg Popeye
…because I’m speculating that Glak didn’t have a Nintendo license to produce their own Popeye cabinet.
As you could probably guess, this cabinet popped up in Rhode Island this week.
I’d have to look back, but I’m pretty sure this is the first one of the Glak cabinets I’ve seen with heavy usage of red in their generic panel designs.
This is the only photo available so far, hoping to see some additional photos of the sides and crossing my fingers for some quirky Popeye artwork by the same artist that designed the sideart for Glak’s licensed Universal cabinets (Mr. Do!, Ladybug) It appears to have Glak’s signature single curved piece of bezel/back plexi artwork – which may have been copied off from one of Universal’s early games (see Cosmic Monsters II).
For my readers – If you’ve seen photos of a similar Popeye cabinet, would love to see them – especially if you have photos of the sides. Additionally, if you’ve seen any other versions of well-known games in one of these Glak cabinets, please drop me a line.
Shout out to Scott B. on coming across the cabinet.
